Children are born artists! There are no limits and boundaries for their imagination and creativity. Unlike adults, the world they perceive is not yet malignant with politics and other things. Drawing is one of the fundamental steps of their growth and development. Therefore, it is essential to develop drawing skills in children as it nourishes their sense of expression, enhances motor skills, develops problem-solving skills and boosts their imagination. Therefore, try to encourage your child's drawing abilities as the benefits of drawing helps them in academics and other walks of life.

If you are looking for some tips to encourage and improve your child's drawing skills, here are eight tips you can adopt.

  • Build Creative Confidence in Children
  • Do Not Belittle Your Drawing Abilities In Front of Your Child
  • Be Conscious About How You Validate Your Child's Drawing
  • Make it Fun and Exploratory
  • Keep the Drawing Activities Age-Appropriate
  • Avoid Pushing Children
  • Make a Drawing Routine
  • Do Not Instruct Children to Draw

1.Build Creative Confidence in Children

Drawing skills and creative confidence go hand in hand. No piece of artwork sees the daylight without confidence.

A lot goes into drawing ability, and confidence is one of them. What is more important than having technical knowledge of drawing is the ability to believe in one's creative expression and enjoy the act of drawing.

The first and most important tip to improve drawing skills in children is to help them hold on to their creative confidence and self-confidence as a person. Let your child enjoy the act of drawing!

2. Do Not Belittle Your Drawing Abilities In Front of Your Child

Never say, "I cannot draw", to your child when he or she asks you to draw something. Give it a try and pretend that you can, even if you consider yourself a poor artist. As they say, fake it till you make it!

Children look forward to their parents as an example. Once they feel you cannot draw, they naturally feel it is a challenging task. Show children that you have confidence in yourself and are at peace with your abilities. Sit beside them and draw once in a while.

3. Be Conscious About How You Validate Your Child's Drawing

Stop saying "wow" by default for every piece of drawing your child makes. Ask him or her more about it and then usher them with appreciation to boost confidence. Children at a very young age, like three years, will not usually assign meaning to their drawings. As they grow up, drawing becomes a more meaningful expression for them.

Constructive questioning is critical to building confidence in them. Take time to look at what they have drawn. Be conscious not to suggest what to draw to a toddler. Let the imagination flow freely!

4. Make it Fun and Exploratory

Let children explore and find out more things about drawing themselves. Do not expect any particular outcome from their activity. You can enrol your kids in summer camp in Abu Dhabi where they can improve their painting and other artistic abilities while having fun.

Let them enjoy it in a fun-filled manner. Rather than making them technically perfect, encourage them to try to explore different drawing materials, ideas and techniques. Introduce new materials to them and be behind just watching what the outcomes are. Keep drawing materials at a place where they have access to all the time. You never know when their creativity switches on, and they feel like drawing!

5. Keep the Drawing Activities Age-Appropriate

Drawing is a developmental process in a child's growth. Therefore, it is imperative to keep it age-appropriate and developmental. Observe children throughout their drawing activity rather than teaching them how to draw.

Encourage open-ended exploration of art materials, self-confidence and enjoyment in art and learning. Let children go through the developmental stages of learning to draw at their own pace. As the child develops his or her interest in drawing, you can consider enrolling in Drawing & Painting Lessons for Kids aunting-course, which can be of great help.

6. Avoid Pushing Children

Do not push children to change their style or approach. Never criticize their drawings and correct them. Instead, observe and encourage them by asking open-ended questions. It will help a child artist see and imagine more details and possibilities.

7. Make a Drawing Routine

Try to incorporate drawing into the daily routine of your child. Prepare a drawing zone or an art zone for them if you cannot tolerate a mess inside the house. Help them focus on the motion of their drawing. Buy chunky crayons for an easier grip and washable markers. Let them express themselves freely during their drawing time.

8. Do Not Instruct Children to Draw

A piece of art, may it be a painting or poetry, comes from the free will of an artist. No piece of art comes from compulsion. The same is the case with drawing and young artists. Never instruct a child to draw. Make it a point only to encourage and not instruct by sitting along with them while they draw. Talk with them about their art but never teach them. Correction at a very young age can only damage their self-confidence and interrupt their natural learning process.

The Conclusion

Drawing helps children. It can even help process their intense emotions that may be too complex to put in words. It is thus essential to build their ability to draw from a young age so that they can benefit from it from an early age. In addition, giving children a creative activity like drawing helps them gain self-control of emotional outbursts apart from several other benefits.
